The "built environment" is one of the main ways that we experience history, especially when going about everyday activities. The landscape we see today has been greatly modified by the hand of mankind. Forests have been cleared, land "improved" for farming and rivers diverted. New species of plants and animals have been introduced.
This is a list of buildings and other "structures" associated with Chester which have their own page on this site. The "built environment" is a major part of the "evidence" for history and covers a huge range of infrastructure (roads, railways and canals) and the associated bridges, weirs, locks, stations etc. It also includes city walls and gates, parks, houses, pubs and public buildings. Water and energy networks are also listed under "structures".
Much of what we know of past civilizations comes from the remains of their contribution to the built enviroment, often far more than they left behind in terms of language, laws and societal structure, art and literature.
Further information on the built environment of Chester can be found in several sources.
